The oldest known example of a wooden Wagon Wheel and its axle were found in 2003 at the Ljubljana Marshes in Slovenia. The wheel being made of been made of Ash wood, and its axle has been made of Oak. Radiocarbon dating places Wagon Wheel between 5,100 and 5,350 years old. The question of which culture originally invented the wheeled vehicle remains unresolved.
The Wagon Wheel pictured was most likely made in the late 1800s. Given the size, weight and number of spokes it was most likely used on a heavy freight wagon.
